Abayas

The Abaya “cloak” (Arabic: عباية ʿabāyah),, alternatively known as an aba, embodies a simple yet elegant over-garment worn by women in various regions of the Muslim world. Typically black in traditional form, this attire manifests either as a flowing kaftan or a large square of fabric draped gracefully from the shoulders or head. Enveloping the entire body except for the head, feet, and hands, it can be complemented by a niqāb, a veil that veils everything save for the eyes. Often reserved for special occasions like visits to the mosque and festive celebrations such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the Abaya holds cultural significance. Intriguingly, the Pakistani traditional attire, the Burka, owes its name to the Abaya.
